Smyrna is a city in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. It is located northwest of Atlanta, and is in the inner ring of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 51,271.

Smyrna’s origins can be traced back to the early 19th century, when it was known as Ruff’s Siding. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated it as the town of Smyrna in 1872. It replaced a previous city named for the biblical city of Smyrna because of its railroad terminus. One of the cities earliest settlers was Mary Ozzelle Routledge, who provided meals to the railroad personnel in an area near the tracks that is now known as Mary’s Kitchen Park.

During the Civil War, the city was burned as a result of Sherman’s famous “March to the Sea,” and in 1888, the Smyrna-Vinings Historic district was added to the list of National Register of Historic Places to commemorate the town’s history.
