Can I accidentally miss the in-flight food?

Hello, I am a senior cabin crew member with experience in the airline industry. I want to assure passengers that there is nothing to worry about when it comes to being woken up during meal services. In fact, it is necessary for both service and safety reasons.

  1. Service: It is important to wake passengers up during meal services to ensure that no one misses their meal. This helps prevent any issues or complaints that may arise if a passenger misses their meal. Additionally, meals cannot be served more than 30 minutes after they are heated, and cannot be reheated.
  2. Safety: Waking up passengers allows us to check on their well-being. Many instances of passenger incapacitation have been discovered during meal services, ultimately leading to lives being saved. It is a crucial part of ensuring the safety of all passengers on board.

This policy is standard in my airline, and I believe it is also common in other airlines. However, there are exceptions for passengers who indicate that they do not want to be disturbed, such as using a "Do Not Disturb" sticker or informing the passenger next to them. In these cases, cabin crew will respect their privacy and assume they do not want to eat. From my experience, very few passengers opt for this option, especially on long haul flights.

If a passenger happens to miss a meal, they can always ask the crew as there are usually some extra meals available. It is always best to communicate any concerns or preferences to the cabin crew during the flight.

Always communicate your needs to the cabin crew. Be respectful and considerate in your requests.

When the cabin crew is not occupied, politely inquire, "I am not a frequent flier and this is new to me; could you please wake me for the dinner service?"

Additionally, for added assistance, kindly ask a neighboring passenger to wake you if the flight attendant does not (even though they probably will), acknowledging that it's okay if they forget or are asleep themselves.

There are meals available for all passengers on board. However, not everyone may be awake to receive their meal when it is initially distributed. In such cases, passengers can always request their meal at a later time from the flight attendants. It is important to note that if you are on a flight offering a choice of meals, there is a possibility that your preferred option may run out. To avoid this, you can specify your meal type in advance to ensure it is reserved for you.

In some cases, passengers may miss their meal if they sleep through until the descent, as tray tables must be locked at this point. It is also worth mentioning that airline meals are not always well-received, and some passengers may choose not to consume them if they find them unpleasant.

An alternative way to receive your meal is to travel with someone else who can inform the flight attendants of your meal preference. It is common for attendants to inquire about leaving a meal for a sleeping family member in such situations.

Addendum:

While it is rare to encounter this scenario, it has been suggested that food safety regulations may prevent a previously warmed meal from being reheated after a certain time period. However, on longer flights, there may be a second or even third warm meal service to accommodate passengers who have slept for an extended period of time.
