Dakota City is a city in Dakota County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,150 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dakota County. It was named after the Dakota Indians. Dakota City was platted in 1857 and named after the Dakota Indian tribe that once lived in the area. It was officially incorporated as a village in 1883 and became a city in 1887. The city experienced population growth from the 1880s to the 1950s. In the 1980s to the 2000s, it has experienced a population decrease. Dakota City serves as a center of government for Dakota County. It is located on the Missouri River and has easy access to I-129. The city features industrial, commercial, and retail businesses. Its economy is mainly agriculture and minerals. Dakota City also has a hospital, elementary school, and a community college. Surrounding Dakota City are a variety of natural attractions, including an 18-hole golf course, the Fort Randall Reservoir, and nature preserves. The city is home to a variety of restaurants and recreational activities, as well. The city has an annual summer celebration, known as “Sons of Dakota,” that features a rodeo, fireworks, and a variety of other events. It has also been the site of a polka festival since 1965.
