Hickman is an unincorporated community in Platte County, Nebraska, United States. According to the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 835. The settlement was founded by Samuel A. Hickman in 1908 after he purchased land from the Union Pacific Railroad. It was originally located directly along the railroad tracks south of Columbus, but it had to move due to flooding. In 1909 the town relocated and began using the name Hickman. The town was originally called Hickman’s Siding, in honor of the man who founded the town. Hickman has remained an unincorporated town, with no population growth or decline in the past 100 years. It is mostly agricultural with only a handful of businesses. The main crops in the area are corn, soybeans, and hay. There are a few churches in the area, including St. Luke's Lutheran Church, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Hickman Bible Church, and Hickman United Methodist Church. A majority of the population is affiliated with one of these churches. The community also has a fire station, post office, and a few other local businesses. The town also has a city park and recreation center. The Hickman Community Museum is a local museum that focuses on the history of the town and its surrounding areas. The museum is open to the public free of charge. Hickman is served by the Platte County School District. The town has two schools: Hickman Elementary School and Hickman Middle School. The majority of the students in the town attend either one of these schools. Hickman is an attractive place for retirees due to its small-town atmosphere and low cost of living.
