South Sioux City is a city in Dakota and Dixon counties in the northeastern corner of the state of Nebraska, United States. It is the largest city in Dakota County and home to the area known as the Siouxland Tri-State Area, which includes parts of Iowa and South Dakota, along the Missouri River. It is located along Interstates 29 and 129, which connect it to the nearby cities of Sioux City, Iowa and Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
The city was established in 1886, when Union Pacific Railroad lines were built south of Sioux City and divided Dakota Territory into North and South. Its first settler, Moe F. Wilson, drew lots for homesteads to take advantage of a then-new ground transportation system. In 1889, he opened a general store, the first post office in the current town of South Sioux City opened in 1891 and the railway was extended in 1893, simply providing a connection to Sioux City.
South Sioux City was officially incorporated as a village in 1894, with Reuben Wright as its first mayor. By 1907, it had several factories, including a planing mill, a sash and door manufacturing plant, a cylinder oil manufacturing plant, a machine shop, and a sleeve machine factory. The growing city was separated from Dakota City with the river becoming the northern boundary in 1968.
For much of its history, South Sioux City was known for its bustling business district along Dakota Avenue. The local economy was sustained by lumber yards, feed mills, grain elevators, and numerous manufacturing operations. However, the plant closings of the 1960s and 1970s adversely affected the local economy and by the mid-1980s the business district was largely abandoned.
Today, the city is still recovering and trying to rebuild its economy. Recent development projects, such as a new industrial park, as well as efforts to create more tourist attractions, have helped to boost the local economy. The city’s economy is now primarily based on the agricultural sector, along with light industry and some health care and hospitality services.
