Hastings is a city in and the county seat of Adams County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 24,907 at the 2010 census. It is known as the "Heart of the Prairie". It is the principal city of the Hastings, Nebraska Micropolitan Statistical Area, which consists of Adams and Clay counties. Hastings is located on the Platte River, about 95 miles (153 km) west of Omaha. It was founded in 1872, at the junction of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad and the St. Joseph and Denver City Railroad. It was named after Colonel D.P. Hastings of the Burlington and Missouri river railroad. Hastings is the birthplace of Kool-Aid. Hastings is home to the Central Community College Hawks, a Junior College Athletics Program. It is also home to a museum dedicated to Kool-Aid, and is known for its annual Kool-Aid Days celebration. The city holds a rodeo on the Fourth of July every year. A nearby river crossing, now known as the Platte River Bridge, is traditionally thought to have been used by the Great Panther known as "Black Hawk", a famous Sauk leader of the Black Hawk War.
