Crete is a city located in Saline County, Nebraska. It has a population of approximately 6,400 people. The city was founded in 1887 by the Burlington Railroad and was named after the Greek island of Crete. It was originally planned as a stop for the railroad and soon grew into a trading center. The mayor of the city is Lee Reineke. Crete is home to Doane University, a private college and liberal arts school, as well as the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC)–Crete Campus. Doane has an enrollment of 1,100 students and is noted as one of the most picturesque campuses in the United States.
