Holdrege is a city located in Phelps County, Nebraska. It is located near numerous natural features, including the Middle Loup and South Platte rivers. The city was founded in 1882 and has continued to grow since. It is the county seat of Phelps County and has a population of about 5,200 people. It is also known as “The Heart of the Goldenland” for its proximity to the golden grain fields of Nebraska’s mid-section. The history of Holdrege is closely linked to Nebraska’s agriculture, as the city was initially founded when the Nebraska Central Railroad was constructed in 1882. This opened up the area to new settlers. In the early years, much of the city's business came from the railroad associated with freight, but much of the labor associated with the building of the railroad was done by the Native Americans in the area, including the Pawnees. Eventually, the railroad began to decline, but the city soldiered on and found new economic pursuits through its agriculture and commercial activities. Holdrege's largest industry remains agriculture to this day, with corn, soybeans, and winter wheat being major crops in the area.
