Superior is a city located in Nuckolls County, Nebraska, United States. It is roughly an hour drive from Lincoln, the state capital. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in the 1870s as a Quaker settlement by Samuel Northrup and his family, and named after the newly constructed Union Pacific Railroad station on the line, which was given the same name. The city of Superior is the county seat of Nuckolls County and has been since its formation in 1872. It is a third-class city with a city council/city administrator form of government. The economy is largely based on agriculture, with many farms in the surrounding area. The city is located near the eastern edge of Nebraska's Sandhills region. Superior has been identified as the smallest community in the nation to have a municipal electric utility. Superior holds its annual Harvest Days celebration each summer, a fun-filled day for the community. The event includes a parade, street vendors, car show, carnival games, and local entertainment.
