Bellevue is a city in Sarpy County, Nebraska, United States, located in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The population was 51,834 at the 2020 census. Bellevue is the third largest city in Nebraska. It is located near the Platte River. Bellevue was founded in 1856 by William Artman, who named the area after a frequent stop on the Platte River, Bellevue Hill. It was incorporated as a village in 1871 and became a city in 1956. Bellevue was originally a farming town and was used as a base for freight wagons for traders going to the west. Since then, the city has grown substantially, and today is a commercial and industrial center, with much of its economy driven by Offutt Air Force Base, located south of the city. Other major employers in the area are the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Bellevue University, Oreck Vacuum Company and Greater Omaha Packing Company. Bellevue is home to several parks and recreation centers, a public library, and several museums, including the Sarpy County Museum, the Lofthus-Sandoz Art Museum and the Omaha Zoo.
