Gothenburg is a city in Dawson County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 3,574 at the 2010 census. Gothenburg was founded in 1882 by Olof Bergstrand, a Swedish immigrant, who named it after his hometown Gothenburg, Sweden. It is sometimes called the Beef Capital of the World due to its large involvement in cattle ranching, feedlots, and beef processing. The city has also been strongly affected by the railroad. The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy railroad line runs through the center of the city, and its tracks used to go in two different directions at a spot called “Gothenburg Junction”, which is now home to the antique shops and boutiques that make up the city. Gothenburg has numerous lists of events and attractions throughout the year, such as the Gothenburg Fourth of July Celebration, Oktoberfest, an Apple Festival, and the Gothenburg Pioneer Days Rodeo. It also features the Lake Helen Recreation Area, a waterpark and miniature golf.
