Gering is a city located in western Nebraska, in the United States. It is located in Scotts Bluff County in the western part of the state, just east of Scottsbluff National Monument. The population was 8,500 at the 2010 census. Gering was founded in 1886 and named after Fort Gering, an Army outpost established in 1876 near the North Platte River.The fort was named for Colonel Bernhard Gering, a Civil War officer and later the lieutenant governor of Nebraska. Gering was incorporated as a village in 1886. Gering has seen considerable growth in recent years due to its proximity to the Nebraska panhandle and the nearby metropolitan area. Gering is home to Western Nebraska Community College, the local county fair grounds (Scotts Bluff County Fair), the Gering Civic Center, a movie theater, and numerous restaurants and small businesses. The city is close to points of interest in the area, including Scottsbluff National Monument, Chimney Rock National Historic Site, and the Oregon Trail and Mitchell Pass. It is also home to the Gering Youth Rodeo Association which hosts the annual Gering Youth Rodeo and Buffalo Bill Rodeo.
