Hartford City is a city in Madison County, Nebraska, United States. It is located approximately 39 miles northeast of the state capital of Lincoln. It is located in north central Nebraska, in an area with rolling hills, oak savannas, and tall grass prairies. The population was 810 at the 2010 census. The first settlement of Hartford City was in November 1868 on land homesteaded by Watson Alderman, P. H. Thompson, and some of their families. In 1869, two German families, the Smiths and the Prieks, came and helped secure the future of the town. They were followed by other settlers of various nationality, some of whom were looking for land. By 1871, a post office had been established, the town was platted, and a schoolhouse built. Hartford City was officially incorporated in 1872. In 1884, the Hartford City Waterworks Company was started and a water tower was erected, which was heated by wood stoves during the winter months and run down the hills in the summer. Hartford City experienced growth during the homesteading period by bringing in new businesses, churches, schools, and other amenities. In 1910, the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad extended its line to Hartford City, which helped expand the local economy. Hartford City also served as the eastern anchor of the Nebraska Statehood Trail, a wagon train that made its way from North Platte to Omaha in 1912 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Nebraska's statehood. Today, Hartford City is still a small community with an estimated population of just over 800 people. It is a friendly place with many historic buildings including an opera house that was built in 1910 and a few old-fashioned general stores and churches. It is home to the Hartford City Speedway and the Hartford City Museum, which displays artifacts from the town's past. Hartford City also holds an annual “Old Settlers’ Day” celebration during the summer, celebrating the city's settlement over 145 years ago.
