Brazil City : Interesting Facts, History & Information

Brazil is a city located in western Nebraska's Furnas County. It is the county seat and has a population of 212 people, as of the 2010 census. The name of the city is derived from a mineral found in the area. The area was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of miners from Scott's Bluff County. The discovery of iron ore in Furnas County led to the establishment of the town in 1879. The iron industry flourished in the city and the area around it for many decades. Brazil reached its peak population of 433 people in 1930 and has slowly declined since then. Today, the city continues to provide services to its residents, including restaurants, grocery stores, and a post office. In addition, there is a museum devoted to Nebraska’s iron and coal industry, which is open to the public. Brazil is also known for its annual Iron County Days celebration, held in August.
