Fort Branch was used as a temporary shelter and trading post by western travelers heading west. By 1878, the fort had been abandoned and settlers began to move to the area. The town was officially incorporated in 1881 with a population of 36. Through the years, the population of Fort Branch saw a steady decline, eventually dropping to just 12 by 1950. Today, Fort Branch is a quiet rural community with a population of around 35.
