Brownstown is a village in Ashland County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 254 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lincoln, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded in 1886 and named after its first postmaster, William B. Brown. The area was first settled by Christian Liepe in 1870. Liepe was of German Mennonite stock and his family were among the first settlers in the area. The first public building in the village was a one-room schoolhouse built in 1896. The Brownstown post office was established in 1886, and the First National Bank was chartered in 1895. The village was incorporated in 1910 and was re-incorporated in 1916. Today Brownstown is a small farming community surrounded by a beautiful rolling countryside. Most of the town's commerce is derived from agricultural business and services. The local school, Brownstown Public School, serves the area around the village, and the village is also home to a branch of the Ashland Public Library. Brownstown is a thriving small community with many of its residents coming from four generations of family who arrived with Christian Liepe in 1870.
