Syracuse, Nebraska is located in Otoe County and is part of the Lincoln, Nebraska metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1869 and was originally called Palmyra. It was renamed Syracuse after the New York town of the same name in 1878. It was incorporated in 1889. The population was 1,977 as of 2019. The town of Syracuse is home to several parks and recreation areas including Syracuse Park, which features a community pool, playground, tennis courts, and plenty of green space for outdoor recreation. The town also has an 18-hole golf course and a city library. The schools in town are part of the Syracuse Public Schools District, which includes an elementary school, middle school, and a high school. Syracuse is noted for the former Central Nebraska Telephone (CNT) company, which was founded in 1898 and continued to operate until 2003 when it was sold to Qwest Communications. CNT provided telephone service to many towns in Central Nebraska and was the predecessor to the modern-day internet service provider.
