Ossian is a small village in Antelope County, Nebraska. It is located 25 miles Northest of Norfolk on state highway 14. Ossian was founded in 1873 and was named after a legendary 3rd century Gaelic warrior – Ossian MacFhearaon. The founding of the village began with a white settler – John Bahr – who purchased a section of land from the government. He eventually sold this land to George Read who visualized a village. His vision was realized and the community was named after Ossian and thus Ossian was incorporated in 1884. Soon after that, the village was served by stagecoach, a post office, stores, churches and a school. Today, the village of Ossian remains small with around 180 people, but is a great spot for nature exploration and adventure. There is no industry in the village, but there are some amenities available at the local grocery store, soda shop, hardware store and car wash. Ossian is located near a few landmarks like the Elkhorn River, Indian Cave State Park and the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway, which makes the village a great spot for outdoor adventurers. Ossian continues to be a great place to call home, and its history and charm still remains strong in the small village.
