Founded in 1870, Greendale is located near Lincoln and Omaha, and was one of the first suburbs of the two cities. The village was platted by two brothers from Indiana, George and James W. Greer. The village was named for the brothers, and the Greer family of Indiana was the area's first settlers. In the early years, the village was surrounded by farming and ranching, and was also home to the now defunct Greendale Cotton Mill. Greendale was incorporated as a village in 1923, and the population has remained relatively small since then. Today, the village is primarily a bedroom community, with many people commuting to nearby Lincoln and Omaha for work. The village is home to a public library, a post office, and several local businesses.
