The town was named after Cumberland, Maryland, because one of its founders was born there. Cumberland was founded in 1887 when the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad laid a line through Phelps County, Nebraska. In 1889, the first store in the village was established by Charles Damon. Cumberland became the largest town in the county during the 1920s and 1930s, reaching a peak of 300 residents. The town's first bank opened in 1915. The first post office was established in 1887. The town got its electricity from a plant that opened in 1926; it was one of the first in Phelps County to have electric service. For many decades, the village's main economic activity was farming (especially corn, wheat, oats, and hay). In the 1960s, Cumberland saw a major industry go up — a large turkey processing plant. This plant helped to make the village a local services center for many years. Today, Cumberland is essentially a residential and agricultural village. It is a popular spot for camping, fishing, and boating, among other recreational activities.
