Sheridan is a city located in Dixie County, Florida, United States. It is located on the Gulf Coast just to the south of John’s Pass. The city is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the 2010 census, the population of Sheridan was 468. It has seen rapid growth since then, with a population of over 1,130 as of 2020. The settlement of what is now Sheridan was established in 1890 by W.C. Gurnee. The Gurnee family planted orange groves and built a post office there that operated until 1945. Legend has it that the town was named for a traveling stagecoach attendant, who hopped off at the post office to deliver mail, and exclaimed, “This would be a great place for a city,” and was hencely dubbed the “city of Sheridan.” The area was finally incorporated in 1925 and soon became a popular resort town, with white sand beaches, a variety of watersports, and lush vegetation. Over the years, the population dwindled, but the town is currently seeing renewed growth from people drawn to its beaches and easy access to larger cities.
