Charlestown is a small village in Knox County, Nebraska, USA. It is a village of about 75 people, located about 15 miles west of Verdigre. The village was established in 1873, and was incorporated in 1881. It is the only incorporated village in Knox County. It was named for Charles P. Brown, whose homestead was the site of the original village. Charlestown was an agricultural-based community until the early 20th century when large meat packing plants and creameries came to the region. This led to a boom in the area. The Bergen and Sturtevant Meat Packing Plant was established near the village, and the Jacobsen Creamery was moved from Norfolk to nearby Creighton. The village of Charlestown is home to the Willow Creek wind farm, a wind power project owned and operated by the Omaha Public Power District. The wind farm is capable of generating enough electricity to power 11,000 homes. The area has a number of historical sites of interest, including several restored one-room schoolhouses, the W.O. Haley Blacksmith Shop Museum, and Miller’s Oficina, a restored 19th century grocery store. The Main Street of Charlestown offers many services and shops, including the Columbus Bar & Grill, the historic Post Office and the Old Star Mercantile. Every July, the village celebrates the Annual Homecoming and Rodeo, which features rodeo performances, musical entertainment, and other fun activities.
