Dalton is a city located along the northern border of Georgia’s Whitfield County. It is the county seat and most populous city of the county. It is the second-largest city in northwest Georgia and the largest city in the Appalachian Mountains. The city was founded in the late 1820s, and it was named in honor of General Tristram Dalton. Dalton has established itself as an industrial center and is the birthplace of the carpet industry in the United States.
The area has been inhabited for thousands of years by various cultures, most notably the Cherokee and Creek Native American tribes. Archaeological evidence has been found dating back to the Paleo-Indian period in the region. The earliest European settlements were largely established in the late 18th century when settlers began arriving from the newly created United States.
One of Dalton’s earliest settlers, James Mathis, established a store in the area. By the early 19th century, the small settlement was known as Cross Plains. In 1837, the growing community incorporated and was officially named Dalton.
