History & Information of Augusta-Richmond County, GA

Augusta-Richmond County is located in east-central Georgia in the Fall Line Region on the Savannah River. It serves as the county seat of Richmond County and is the second-largest city in Georgia after Atlanta. Founded in 1738 on the Fall Line of the Savannah River, it remains a historically significant city to this day.

In 1785, Augusta was chosen as the meeting place for the Continental Congress. It served as the new nation’s first seat of government and eventually became the home of the first US president, George Washington.
