History & Information of Canton, GA

Canton is a city in and the county seat of Cherokee County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 22,958, up from 7,709 in 2000. Canton is located near the Etowah River and is 39 miles north of Atlanta.

Canton was founded in 1833 as the seat of Cherokee County by proposition of settlers from Taylor’s Ridge and Holly Creek. The Cherokee of the area supported the forcible removal of the Indians during the Cherokee Trail of Tears in the 1830s. The city was named for the fact that it was the closest settlement to the Chinese trading post at the juncture of the Etowah River and the Canton River. The city became a booming center of local trade, as well as the county seat in 1833.

In 1834, the first county courthouse was built and is still standing on the town square. The city was previously known as Etowah Courthouse. In 1846, the city was officially renamed Canton, beginning a brief period of economic growth and industrial development.

During the American Civil War, the Canton railroad depot served as a train station, a point of contact between the Union and Confederate troops. During the war, an arsenal was built in the city and became a Confederate stronghold. Many of the city’s inhabitants volunteered to serve in the Confederate army.

In the early 20th century, Canton experienced a population explosion, due to the completion of the Marietta and North Georgia Railway. This railway made it possible for residents to travel to and from the city for work or for leisure. The population continued to grow, and by the 1940s, the city had made several industrial advances, and the population had grown to 4,796.

Today, Canton is a thriving city and is the home of a number of historic sites, such as the historic county courthouse, the Etowah Indian Mounds, the Etowah Archeological Site, and the Canton Theater.
