History & Information of Brookhaven, GA

Brookhaven is a city in the northern suburbs of Atlanta, located in western DeKalb County, Georgia, United States, directly northeast of Atlanta. It is named for the brook that runs through its center. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of just over 40,000.

The area now known as Brookhaven was originally settled by pioneers from the East Coast around 1810. This migration of settlers was due in part to the need for reliable transportation between Savannah and the Midwest. The region became known as Cross Keys, after an inn and stagecoach stop located in the area.

The area that is now downtown Brookhaven was once a thriving little crossroads called Cross Keys mostly known for its church, its blacksmith and its hotel. The hotel was located at the current corner of Dresden Drive and Apple Valley Road and was owned by Ephraim Goza. It was a favorite stopping spot for traveling ministers, attorneys and other professionals.
