In the early days of Kendallville, a man by the name of A.J. Kendall owned the town's general store. Legend has it that when the railroad came through the area, Kendall had a sign printed and tacked up to his store, proclaiming it the town of Kendallville after him. The railroad officers then renamed the city: Kendallville. Since that time, Kendallville has been home to the Antelope County Fair, an annual event that takes place the second week of August. The city also hosts a yearly holiday parade, which starts in Garrett and ends in Kendallville. The city is primarily agricultural, with many family farms continuing to be passed down from generation to generation.
