Middlebury is a village in Phelps County, Nebraska, United States. It is located in the south-central part of the state, approximately 8 miles (13 km) south of Holdrege. The population was 108 at the 2010 census. The village was founded in 1870 by Sterling Middlebury in partnership with William Bentley. The first post office was established in 1871. Middlebury originally grew thanks to its agricultural base, but in the late 19th century, it grew due to the railroad. It has remained relatively small since then. Middlebury is served by Nebraska Highway 23 and is surrounded by the Townships of Garfield, Liberty, and Wheeler. The village is within the Southern High Plains ecological area. It is home to an elementary school, built in 1934, and the Middlebury Public Library.
