Avilla is an unincorporated village located in Hall County, Nebraska. It is located about 10 miles southwest of Grand Island, Nebraska. Avilla was founded in 1894. Initially, the town was known as “Big Mound”, but was later renamed to Avilla. The village was named after one of its postmasters, A.V. Wilder. The village is thought to have been named after his home of Indiana’s Avilla. Avilla had a post office which was destroyed in a tornado in 1954. In addition, the village had a grocery store, two blacksmiths, a school, a creamery, a feed mill, two elevators, and two churches. There were also two houses, a hotel, a newspaper, and a butcher. By 1925, the population of the village had grown to seventy-five people. Today, the village of Avilla is nearly a ghost town. There are no businesses in the village, and only two houses remain. The Avilla Cemetery is still actively maintained, however. The Avilla Village Hall is located at 21 N. Lincoln Street. This building was formerly uses as a post office and is now the location for the village's historical society meetings. The meeting hall also contains a library and museum dedicated to the history of the village. The village's history is still celebrated today through a local festival that is held on the first Saturday of every August. Residents of the village and the surrounding area gather for a potluck and activities such as a horseshoe tournament.
