Fortville is a village in Douglas and Sarpy counties in the state of Nebraska, United States. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The population was 353 at the 2010 census. The main highway through the village is Fort Road, named after the original military outpost established in the area in 1865. The outpost was built to protect homesteaders and newly arrived Swedish immigrants. It was decommissioned in 1868 and the land was divided into five separate acres and sold to different families. The village was founded as Fortville when a post office was established in 1877. The town was formally incorporated in 1976. Fortville is the location of the Fortville Centennial Historic Site. The Fortville Committee of the Douglas County Historical Society purchased the property in 1970 and created a museum to honor the legacy of the original Fort and the Swedish immigrants who built the community. The remainder of the property has been restored to recreate a typical early settlement in the area. Today, Fortville is a small rural community with access to both Omaha and Papillion. Local businesses include a cafe, a pizza parlor, a gas station, a hardware store, and a variety of other shops. The town is also home to a small fire department, and a volunteer EMS squad.
