Versailles is a small city located in central Nebraska, southwest of Lincoln and southeast of Kearney. The town was named after Versailles, France, due to its many French settlers.
The history of Versailles began with the arrival of the first settlers in the late 1860s. Among the first settlers was P. B. Livingston, who platted the village in 1874. Over the following years, many more settlers arrived, including new residents from England and Switzerland.
By 1880, the town had grown to a population of 208 and had become an important railroad center. In 1889, the city was formally incorporated.
Due to its favorable location, Versailles quickly became a major center of commerce and manufacturing. A lumberyard, a brickyard, and numerous shops and businesses sprang up in the area. As late as 1910, there were 2,036 people living in Versailles.
