New Palestine City : Interesting Facts, History & Information

New Palestine is a community in southwest Lincoln County, Nebraska. It lies 17 miles southwest of North Platte. The origin of the name is disputed. The village was platted in 1881 by the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad. It was named for either a semi-mythica “New Palestine” from where the first settlers came, a group of emigrants from Palestine, Texas in 1872, or a city of that same name in Indiana. New Palestine is located in the gentle rolling hills and open pastures of the Pawnee Valley, where only a few hundred people live. It offers an eclectic mix of modern amenities and rural charm. New Palestine has an active community center, historic downtown district, Calvary Lutheran Church, a community golf course, and a k-6 school. The city also has a 4-H club and a Unity Players theater group. The city is notable for its small population (about 80 individuals in 2020) and the scenic beauty of its rural surroundings. New Palestine is located in the famous "Lonelies" area, a portion of Nebraska that receives scant medical care, law enforcement, and minimal everyday services. Although it may lack some of the services found in larger towns, New Palestine offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
