The first established population of Lethbridge were a group of Indigenous peoples living along the Oldman River as far back as 10,000 years ago. The arrival of Europeans occurred in the late 18th century. The city is named after William Lethbridge, a Canadian Northwest Mounted Police officer and the third mayor of Lethbridge.

The city grew quickly due to the transportation links with the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the subsequent construction of a bridge over the Oldman River.
