Guelph, located in southwestern Ontario, is a city of over 128,000 people, located approximately 100 kilometres west of Toronto. It is also part of the Golden Horseshoe region and the Greater Toronto Area.

In 1827, the area now known as Guelph was the site of a new settlement being created by a Scotsman named John Galt, who was a major figure in the development of Upper Canada in the early 19th century. His intention was to establish a model village which could serve as a “Canadian Eden”. The settlement was named after the Royal House of Hanover in England, hence the “Guelph” designation.

As the city increased in size and grew in economic importance, it became a major centre of manufacturing in Canada.

In the years following World War II, the city was transformed from a predominantly agricultural community into a modern industrial city with strong emphasis on education, technology, and public services.
