Chowmahalla Palace

Chowmahalla Palace is a palace of the Nizam of Hyderabad state. The palace is located near Charminar in Hyderabad city. It served as the throne of the Asaf Empire and the official home of the Nizam of Hyderabad.
It was built in the year 1869 during the reign of 5th Nizam Afzal-ud-Daula, Asaf Jah Pancham. It spreads over an area of 45 acres.

  1. In Urdu, Hindi, Char (Chau) means 4 and in Persian also Chahar means Char, Mahal in Urdu and Hindi means Palace,That is why it was named Chowmahalla.
  2. This palace was one of the largest palaces in India, covering an area of about 45 acres, but currently, it is spread over an area of only 12 acres.
  3. The southern courtyard is the oldest part of the palace, consisting of a group of 4 palaces, Afzal Mahal, Mahatab Mahal, Tahanit Mahal, and Aftab Mahal are prominent. It is made in the neo-classical style.
  4. The northern courtyard of this palace houses 1 Bara Imam, on whose eastern side a long corridor of rooms and a central fountain and pool are built in the center.
  5. The clock above the main gate of the palace is called the “Khilwat Clock“. It has been operating continuously for about 251 years.
  6. There is a rare collection in the council meeting hall located in this palace, in which manuscripts and precious books have been kept very well preserved.
  7. The most beautiful structure of this palace is the Roshan Bungalow situated within it, it is believed that the sixth Nizam lived here and he named the building after his mother Roshan Begum.
  8. The Reconstruction of this palace was also started again in the year 2005, which took 5 years.
  9. The Asia Pacific Mary Award for UNESCO’s Cultural Heritage Preservation was also given to the Chowmahalla Palace on 15 March 2010.
  10. UNESCO representative Takahiro Makino officially deliver plaque and certificate to Queen Esra, Let me tell you that Queen Esra was the ex-wife of the Sultan and also the GPA holder of Prince Mukarram Jah Bahadur.
  11. In January 2005, it was decided to keep Chowmahalla Palace open for the public.
  12. The reconstruction of this palace was carried out by Princess Esra between 2005-2010 AD.

Architecture of chowmahalla palace

Salabat Jung started its construction work in 1750. Its construction was completed between 1857 and 1869 in the time of Afzal ad-Dawlah, Asaf Jah.It is a unique palace for its size and elegance. The construction work of this palace started in the 18th century and after many years it was completed in a unique shape.

North Courtyard

This part of the palace has a long corridor of rooms called Bara Imam, facing the central fountain and pool.There is also a glass building on the opposite side of Bara Imam. At one time this room was used as a guest house.

South courtyard

It is the oldest part of the palace and has four palaces named Afzal Mahal, Mahatab Mahal, Tahaniyat Mahal, and Aftab Mahal. It is constructed in the Neoclassic style.

The clock above the main gate of the Chowmahalla Palace is also known as the Khilafat Clock. This Clock has been in operation for about 251 years. Every week a special mechanic supervises the watch.

It is the heart of the Chowmahalla Palace. The people of Hyderabad respect this very much, as this was the seat of the Asaf Jahi kingdom.
