Forestdale City : Interesting Facts, History & Information

Forestdale is an unincorporated community in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It is bordered by the City of Birmingham to the northeast and west, and by Graysville to the south. The population of the zip code area known as Forestdale was 12,765 as of the 2010 Census.

The earliest known settlement in the area was in the 1840s when a doctor from Tennessee named William McAdams purchased land at the southern tip of what is now Forestdale. McAdams later sold the land to Robert Muldoon and Henry Schulgen, who established a stagecoach line that ran between Birmingham and Gadsden. Around the turn of the century, the area was formally subdivided into commercial and residential lots and became known as “Forestdale.”

Throughout the 20th century, Forestdale went through periods of growth and decline. The population increased substantially in the 1950s and early 1960s, due in large part to the influx of G.I.s returning from World War II and their families. However, economic hardship and flight to the suburbs in the 60s caused many businesses to close and the population to decline. By the 2000s, however, many of the area’s original residents and their descendants had moved back and the area was experiencing a resurgence. Property values have increased and commercial development continues, though the population is still largely working class and lower middle class.

Today, Forestdale is an ethnically and economically diverse community. It boasts a community center, several parks and walking trails, and a variety of community events throughout the year.
