Clanton is a city in Chilton County, Alabama, and is the county seat. It is located in the central part of the state, about 50 miles south of Birmingham and 23 miles northwest of Montgomery. The population was 8,619 at the 2010 Census.

Clanton was founded in 1868, and was originally called Burnett Station after the Burnett family gave the land it was founded on. The city was originally planned by the McRee family and the county commissioners and it was located at a railroad crossing of the Central of Georgia Railroad and the Southern Railway. Initially railroad service was not available, so all supplies had to be transported to the town by wagon. The original town had a blacksmith shop, hotel, grist mill, two stores, a church, and a school. In 1883, the Chilton Court House and jail were built and the county seat was moved to Clanton from nearby Lambert (now known as Jemison). The town was officially incorporated in 1890 and was later renamed for Francis Clanton, a Confederate general.

The town expanded during the Great Depression and the population had increased to over 3000 by the 1950s. In 1960, a modern courthouse was built. The city has seen a strong growth in recent years, especially in the area of medical services. Clanton is now home to several hospitals and nursing homes. The city is also the home to the Alabama Peach Festival, which is held annually in June.
