Winnipeg is the capital and largest city of the province of Manitoba, Canada, and is located in the geographic centre of North America at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers. The city was founded in 1873 at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers as the first permanent railway settlement in Western Canada. It became the sixth-largest city in Canada with an estimated 778,489 people in 2021.

The original inhabitants of the area were the Assiniboine people, who resided along the Red and Assiniboine Rivers in what is now the downtown area. The crew named the area Winnipeg, after the Cree word win-nipi meaning “muddy waters”.

The coming of the railroads in the late 19th century marked the beginning of Winnipeg’s modernization. It was the rail lines that opened the city up to migration from the rest of Canada, and it was the railroads that made it possible for the grain industry to boom in the Canadian prairies during the 19th and 20th centuries. The local economy thrived, with Winnipeg becoming an important hub for commerce.
