In the days of slavery, were heterosexual interracial pairings more common with black men and white women, or black women and white men?

Accepted answer

DISCLAIMER: I don't have raw data to support what follows, but I base this on some literature (artistic literature, not historical sources).

Considering:

  • The fact that possessing slaves on plantation was a difficult task, and thus mostly started and transmitted by and to men, the "master" of the slaves would be a white man -thus having relation with women
  • That women were considered in the culture of that time as "house keepers", seeing them with black men would have been badly perceived

=> The answer to the question is that White men + Black women was more frequent than White women + Black men.

Also, this is what is mostly seen in the literature speaking of that time, either contemporary or not.
