Hamilton City is located in Ravalli County, Montana. It is the county seat and one of the most populous towns in the state with a population of 4,919 at the 2010 Census. The city is named after J.F. Hamilton, founder of the Hamilton Trading Post.

The area has a long history of human settlement, and was used by many Native American tribes. The first permanent settlement by Euro-Americans was established in 1881 by John F. and Margaret Hamilton. They, along with LDS missionary Father John William Flora, established a general store and trading post. The store and post became Kalispell House, the oldest business in Ravalli County.
