when they first saw the city of Paris on the horizon, his students said to him: “Master, see how lovely the city of Paris is! Wouldn't you like to be lord over this place?” (So they said, believing they would have some word of edification in response.) Thomas replied: “I would sooner have Chrysostom’s Homilies on the Gospel of Saint Marthew."122 As for this city, if it were indeed mine, the care of its governance would deprive me of the contemplation of the things of God and restrain me from every spiritual consolation.”

According to one story he is said to have been asked if he would like to be lord of Paris. He is supposed to have replied that he would not know what to do with the city and that he would rather have the (presumably lost) homilies of St John Chrysostom (c.347–407) on the Gospel of St Matthew.29
