The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Peace, the patron saint of the Dominican Republic. The cathedral was built from the contributions of the local parishioners and with the assistance of the then mayor, Father Blas Floro. It was consecrated in 1948 and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Peace.
