It is located on the banks of the Big Blue River and is part of the McCook, Nebraska micropolitan area. According to the 2010 census, the population of Geneva was 2,241. The town was named after Geneva, New York, the hometown of an early settler. Geneva was the county seat of Fillmore County from its creation in 1871 until 1975, when it was dissolved and merged into Fillmore County's neighboring county, Thayer County. After the merger, Geneva remained the county seat, although it was now located in Thayer County. Agriculture has long been the foundation of Geneva's economy; it is home to many farms and large-scale production agriculture operations. The city also has a number of retailers, restaurants, and other businesses that serve the local population. The city is also headquarters to two banks and one credit union.
