North Manchester, Nebraska is a small town located in Cass County. It is approximately 13 miles southwest of Norris City and located on the edge of the Loess Hills, a region of hills of windblown silt in the Midwest of the United States. The population of North Manchester was estimated at 717 as of the year 2017. There are currently three mayor-council in the city, and its primary industries are agriculture, retail, and services. The earliest recorded histories of the area note a Native American burial mound located in the town. This is the largest Native American mound found in Nebraska, and it is believed to be from the Woodland Period, somewhere between 1000 BCE and 1200 CE. It is believed that the mound was built by ancestors of the Omaha, Kansas, Iowa, and Ponca tribes. North Manchester was first permanently settled in 1871. It was dubbed Manchester in 1873 and named after the town from which many of its settlers had originated, Manchester, Iowa. In 1901, to distinguish it from Manchester, New Hampshire, the name North Manchester was adopted. In the 1930s, the town saw an influx of German-Americans, and it is estimated that around 75 percent of the town's population is of German descent today.
