Waterloo is a village in Lancaster County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 231 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lincoln, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement at Waterloo was made in 1862. Waterloo was incorporated as a village in 1874. The village was named for a similar-sized settlement in Germany. The chief industry has been agriculture, which still dominates the local economy. Today, Waterloo is the site of one of two nuclear power plants in Nebraska, the Cooper Nuclear Station, which generates electricity for the city of Omaha and other surrounding areas. The station opened in 1974 and provides a base source of employment for the area. Waterloo is served by the Waterloo Public School District and is home to a post office, public library, and a few small businesses. There are also numerous churches throughout the village.
