Kissimmee is a city in Osceola County, Florida. It is the county seat of Osceola County, and is located in Central Florida, 24 miles south of Orlando. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 59,682. It is a Principal City of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a 2010 population of 2,134,411.
Kissimmee originally began as a small rural farming community in the mid-1800s, known as Allendale. When the South Florida Railroad arrived in 1882, and the area began to rapidly grow, the area was renamed Kissimmee after local cattle rancher and cattlemen’s club president Hamilton Disston.
Kissimmee was incorporated in 1883, and throughout the 1880s and 1890s, the town prospered through cattle and citrus production.
