Athens-Clarke County is located in the state of Georgia and is the core county of the Athens-Clarke County, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of the Clarke County. The county seat of Athens-Clarke County is the city of Athens, the sixth-largest city in the state of Georgia, and home to the University of Georgia (UGA). The population of Athens-Clarke County was estimated at 126,465, in 2020.
The area in which Athens-Clarke County is located has been inhabited for thousands of years and has gone through several different names and jurisdictions over the past two centuries. In 1785, the Georgia General Assembly recognized the need for a county seat, and the city of Athens was selected and named after the ancient home of the Greek gods – Athens. Athens-Clarke County was created in 1801, and was initially part of Jackson County. The original county covered much of the region that is now Clarke County, but it was later split up into smaller jurisdictions in the late 18th century.
In 1991, Athens-Clarke County was consolidated into one unified government, combining the governments of the city of Athens and the county of Clarke.
