Trussville City : Interesting Facts, History & Information

Trussville is a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, located in Jefferson County. The city was established in 1889 and was originally known as Morrisville, a name chosen by its founder, Bostonian Horace King, who had traded land for the promise of a rail line to the town. The city was named after a foreman of the railway, Jonathan Truss, who had initially surveyed the area and built the trestle for the line.

In the late 19th century, the area around Trussville was a rural community with a thriving lumber industry. The development of the railroads facilitated the growth of the city and it quickly became an active commercial center, with businesses such as timber mills, lime works and a few scattered stores.

As the population of Trussville increased, the town was incorporated on June 3, 1955. It was given city status in 1964. Today, Trussville is the largest city in Jefferson County with an estimated population of 21,018 people in 2019.

It is home to a number of historical landmarks, such as the Trussville Historic District, a landmark within the city limits determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. There is a municipal park located on the grounds of the former lumber mill known as Civitan Park. Trussville has also become a retail destination for the region, with one of the largest shopping centers in the state located along the Chalkville Mountain Road corridor.

Trussville has been featured in national publications multiple times, and in 2010, the city was recognized as one of the best places to start a business and raise a family in the United States by Forbes magazine. Despite its growth and popularity with transplants, Trussville remains one of the premiere small towns of Alabama, offering its residents a unique sense of history and culture.
