Russellville, Alabama is a city located in Franklin County. The population of the city was estimated to be 9,820 people as of 2019. The town was established in 1832 as the county seat of Franklin County.
The city was named for William Russell, a pioneer settler who arrived in Franklin County in 1827. He was a wealthy man whose family had migrated from Virginia. He and his wife, Martha, built the first Baptist Church in Franklin County.
In 1833, Russell and his family moved to the area that would become the city of Russellville. He named the town to honor his family name.
The city has a rich heritage and is home to many interesting and beautiful sites. The original courthouse from the late 1800s still stands in Russellville. The Patton-Crosswhite House, built in 1836, is a local historic landmark. Old Union Cemetery contains some of the earliest settlers to the area, as well as the graves of veterans of all wars. The Franklin County High School, built in 1911, is one of the oldest high schools still in operation in Alabama.
The city’s economy relies on manufacturing, agriculture, forestry, retail, and other businesses. Major employers in the area include Russellville Container Corporation, Russellville Furniture, and International Paper. The city also boasts a popular tourist destination, Russellville Lake.
Today, Russellville is small city with a population of under 10,000 people. The city has a thriving downtown area with historic buildings, restaurants, and retail establishments. Local businesses contribute to the tax base and provide jobs to the citizens of Russellville. The city is a great place to visit and to call home.

Russellville, Alabama is best known as the birthplace of the legendary bluesman W.C. Handy. Its other claim to fame is its connection to the country music singer Richard Leigh, who grew up in the town and attended Russellville High School.
