McCalla is a suburb of Birmingham, located in Jefferson County, Alabama. It is surrounded by Bessemer, Brookside, Brighton, McAdory and Vance. The area was settled before the Civil War by the Clayton McAdory, a planter and merchant. In the 1880s, as demand for cotton increased, many speculators began buying property in the area. The town was officially incorporated in 1911 and named McAdory in honor of Clayton McAdory. The area’s growth and development was limited due to the lack of roads and railroads in the area.

The town was finally established as McCalla when developers from Birmingham bought a portion of the area in the 1960s, renamed it McCalla, and began annexing it into the city of Birmingham. The new city was incorporated in 1965. McCalla is currently home to many families, with the majority being white and over 90 percent of the population having at least a high school diploma. The town also has a strong faith base, with multiple churches throughout the area.

McCalla is part of the Birmingham-Hoover, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is also home to a branch of the Jefferson County Library that serves residents of McCalla and the surrounding area.
